Trump Zeroes In On Federal Takeover Of DC, While City Officials Remain Deferential To Him
President Donald Trump is expected to ramp up efforts to curb crime in the nation’s capital on Monday as he threatens a federal takeover of Washington, DC, all while city officials largely remain deferential to him.
The event comes after Trump launched a surge of federal law enforcement in DC over the weekend that up to 450 officers were expected participate in, according to a White House official.

Israel’s military targeted an Al Jazeera correspondent with an airstrike Sunday, killing him, another network journalist and at least six other people, all of whom were sheltering outside Gaza City’s largest hospital complex.
Officials at Shifa Hospital said those killed included Al Jazeera correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohamed Qreiqeh. The strike also killed four other journalists and two other people, hospital administrative director Rami Mohanna told The Associated Press. The strike also damaged the entrance to the hospital complex’s emergency building.

Australia will recognize a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Monday, joining the leaders of France, Britain and Canada in signaling they would do so.
His remarks followed weeks of urging from within his Cabinet and from many in Australia to recognize a Palestinian state and amid growing criticism from officials in his government over suffering in Gaza. Australia’s government has also criticized plans announced in recent days by Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu for a sweeping new military offensive in Gaza.

A woman was killed and five other people were hurt when gunfire erupted early Sunday at a large outdoor gathering on Chicago's West Side – one of three separate shootings to occur in the same neighborhood in fewer than three hours, according to police.
The shooting occurred just before 2:48 a.m. local time on North La Cross Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago, according to an incident report from the Chicago Police Department.

Rice Lake’s Sheplee Commits To Wisconsin
The Wisconsin women’s basketball program just pulled off the type of in-state recruiting win that turns heads.
Rice Lake’s Adaline Sheplee, one of the top 2026 wings in the country, announced she's staying home to play for head coach Robin Pingeton.
According to ESPN, Sheplee is the No. 32 overall player in the nation and a four-star recruit. The 247Sports Composite rated her as the No. 51 player nationally, No. 16 among power forwards, and No. 2 in the state of Wisconsin. That makes her the second-highest-ranked recruit in Badgers women’s basketball history, trailing only Latonya Sims in the class of 1997.

Gov. Tony Evers on Friday vetoed five bills, including one that would have created a portable benefits program for many gig workers and another that could have sent thousands of formerly incarcerated people back to prison for violating release conditions.
In veto messages, Evers argued that the gig workers program was hastily contrived and took away protections from gig drivers “in the absence of any guaranteed benefit for workers.”

Gov. Tony Evers is urging the Trump administration not to end a program that awarded Wisconsin more than $60 million to help low- and moderate-income families access solar energy.
The New York Times reports the Trump administration was preparing to terminate $7 billion in federal grants awarded through the Solar for All program.
According to the Times report, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency planned to send termination letters to 60 organizations that received grants from the program, funded by a Biden-era climate law.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced that bonus antlerless harvest authorizations for the 2025 gun deer season will be available for purchase online through the Go Wild license portal and at license sales locations starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2025
Bonus authorizations are sold at a rate of one per person per day until sold out or until the 2025 deer hunting season ends. Bonus authorizations are $12 each for Wisconsin residents, $20 each for non-residents and $5 each for youth ages 11 and under.
