In Memory of Zachary D. Alton

April 28, 1975 - January 22, 2024

Zachary (“Zak”) David Alton passed away on January 22, 2024, at his home in Shell Lake, Wisconsin.

He was 48 years old. Zak was born on April 28, 1975, to Charles and Jill Alton of Rice Lake.

He graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1993 and received a degree as a mechanic from WITC in 1995, graduating first in his class. He spent the majority of his working life in utility construction. Zak was an avid outdoorsman, spending his time hunting, trapping, and fishing throughout northwestern Wisconsin and beyond. He had a membership in various organizations, including the National Rifle Association, National Trappers Association, Wisconsin Trappers Association, and similar associations and clubs. Along with his nephew and frequent outdoor companion Austin Peterson, Zak would take part in local fishing competitions, often with success. He loved the woods. A thoughtful man, Zak listened closely to others and was quick to provide help and items they may need. He liked to educate himself on innumerable topics and would happily banter with anyone on those subjects. Zak had a strong moral compass and held himself to exacting standards. He believed in excellence and taking care of his own.

In addition to Charles and Jill, Zak is survived by his siblings Kate Boortz, Mary Alton, Judd Alton and his wife, Traci Alton, Brock Alton and his wife, Larina Alton, and Mark Alton; his nieces and nephews Hali Alton, Austin Peterson, Saige Peterson, Jack Alton, Forrest Alton, Cayden Meyer, Kylie Meyer, and Carter Meyer, and Tayden Alton; a brother-in-law, Andrew Boortz, and a large extended family of loved ones that is too numerous to include. He is and will be missed. Zak’s last message to his family was “Farewell.”

A memorial will be held on Saturday February 3, 2024, at the Bluegill Bar, 109 S. Main Street, Birchwood, WI 54817, from 1-4 p.m. with a service at 2:00 p.m. Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI is assisting and serving the family with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to the Brill Sportmen's Club.
