In Memory of William 'Bill' Carufel


February 29, 1932 - April 13, 2022

William Charles Carufel, age 90, of Spooner, WI, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, April 13, 2022.

Bill was born February 29, 1932, in Gladstone, MI, to parents William J and Emaline A (Gobert) Carufel.

After moving to Wisconsin, Bill attended high school in Solon Springs where he excelled in basketball and baseball. After graduating from Solon Springs High School in 1950, he worked as an electrician until he enlisted in the US Army in 1952. Bill proudly served his country in the Korean Conflict where he fought in many battles, including the defense of Outpost Harry, which they held at all costs.

Upon being honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of corporal from the Army, he was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard reserves until 1956. In 1956, Bill began his long career with the railroad where he became an engineer. He worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 38 years, retiring in 1994. Bill was the engineer of one of the last trains to leave the Spooner depot and was one of the oldest surviving “Rails”.

During this time, Bill met the love of his life, Kathleen Okonek. They were united in marriage on August 26, 1961. Bill and Kathy started their family shortly after and were blessed with five children.

Bill loved to snowmobile, which he continued to do into his 80’s. He was a member of the Rolling Hills Snowmobile Club for many years. He also enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, playing baseball, and taking care of his lawn.

Bill is survived by his sons, Chuck (Johna) of Indianapolis and Joe (Kim Peterson) of Trego; daughter Mary Mathews of Spooner; grandchildren, Kevin (Kimmy Krug), Heather (Colten Kozial), Jacob, and Olivia; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Mason, Brady, and Brielle; and nieces and nephew.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathy; sons, Tom and Jim; parents; and sister, Hazel.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 18, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Spooner, WI, with a visitation one hour prior with Father Phil Juza officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery.
