In Memory of Walter E. Wheeler

September 30, 1934 - January 5, 2025

Walter Edward Wheeler, age 90, passed away on January 5, 2025, in New Auburn, Wisconsin.

Walter was born to Hubert Earl and Scharlene Wheeler on September 30, 1934, in Lamb, Kentucky.

Walter had a deep love for nature, particularly for feeding and observing the birds and wildlife that visited his backyard. His time was often spent taking great joy in caring for his wife, Kay, and tending to their home. Walter enjoyed working outdoors, whether it was yard work or maintaining his 15-acre hobby farm, a space he cherished for many years. Walter’s love for sports was evident through his involvement in the Youth Bowling League in Rice Lake, where he dedicated his time as a coach, guiding and inspiring young bowlers. His enthusiasm for competition didn’t stop there; as he was also a devoted baseball fan. Walter also had a fondness for playing cards with his family, especially Russian Rummy. A gifted letter writer, he knew how to craft heartfelt messages and memories. His affection for animals, especially his beloved dogs, was evident in the care he showed them. In quieter moments, Walter was an avid reader. He lived a full life, marked by his love for his family, his passions, and the simple joys of being outdoors.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Scharlene Wheeler, his wife, Kay Wheeler, and his siblings, Kenneth, Joyce, Wally, and Harold.

Walter is survived by his children, Michelle (Blane) Hyllested and Kelly Wheeler, grandchildren, Justin, Nikki, and Heather, and sisters, Wanda, Mary, and Barbara, as well as many nieces, nephews, and many other loving family, friends, and neighbors.

Walter will be interred with Military Honors at the Northern Wisconsin Veteran's Cemetery in Spooner, Wisconsin, with a short memorial service on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
