In Memory of Vernon A. Peterson

April 15, 1941 - February 20, 2025

Vernon Anton Peterson, joined his loving wife, Diane, in heaven on Thursday, February 20, 2025 in Rice Lake, WI. Born on April 15, 1941, Vern dedicated his life to hard work, helping others, community service and having fun doing it.

He is survived by his children, Dawn Harwell (Dave) and Phil Peterson (Rachel); grandchildren, Daniel O’Brien, Nathan Harwell (Karlee), Ashley McNamee (Zach), Sean O’Brien (Maria), Sam Peterson (Caitie) and Libby Peterson; great-grandchildren, Brody, Haven, Tessa and baby O’Brien. Additionally, he is survived by his sister, Verna Kay Peterson (Don); sisters- and brothers-in-law Virginia Henrikson, Don and Karen Henrikson, Shirley Rosenbush, Oliver and Jan Aune, Geoff and Nancy Timm, Paul and Lynnette Lindholm; and many nieces and nephews.

Vern lost the love of his life on August 12, 2024, when Diane passed away. They enjoyed traveling together, going out to dinner with friends, lutefisk and visiting Norway. Vern was also preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Pearl Peterson. Vern and his sister Kay grew up in Deronda, Wisconsin.

1959 was a monumental year for Vern: he graduated from Amery High School, married his childhood sweetheart Diane, and embarked on his 40 plus year career at Northern States Power. Vern pursued a life of service. He was an active member in the Jaycees, Amery Fire Department, Amery Ambulance Service, and the Rice Lake Elks Club. He was a community leader, active in Amery Community Club and City Council. Vern enjoyed golf and sports of all kinds. He and his refing partner, Dewey Wolden, officiated at the State Boys Basketball Tournament. Many trips to Missoula, socializing with great friends at Camp Delta, fishing and hunting in North Dakota, traveling to Alaska and woodworking were favorite pastimes.

The family would like to thank Vern and Diane’s circle of caring friends, the staff at Woodstone Senior Living and St. Croix Hospice. We will always remember your care and compassion. Vern believed in helping others.

In lieu of flowers, acts of community service or a donation to charity are fitting ways to honor Vern’s memory. A celebration of Vern’s life will be held later this spring.
