In Memory of Thomas J. Wertschnig
Thomas J. Wertschnig, age 102, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Water’s Edge Care Center in Hayward, WI. He was born on August 25, 1922 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Martin and Anna (Schmidt) Wertschnig.
Tom was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, and graduated from West Milwaukee High School. He proudly served in the United States Army, fighting in the European Campaign of WWII with an anti-tank outfit supporting the infantry. He worked in West Allis at a Machine Shop he owned and operated with four of his closest buddies. He was a resident of West Milwaukee for over 95 years before moving permanently to his home in Stone Lake, WI. Tom enjoyed many winters as a snowbird at his home in Florida. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood carving and was an avid sports fan. Tom was kind, generous and truly a selfless man who was always wanting to help people.
He is survived by his siblings, Verna Cleveland of Colgate, WI, Loretta LeRoy of Stone Lake, WI, and James (Patti) Wertschnig of Delafield, WI, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
In addition to his parents, Thomas is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Martin Wertschnig; his brothers-in-law, Frank Cleveland and Robert LeRoy; and his sisters-in-law, Josephine and Margaret Wertschnig.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at St. Philip Catholic Church in Stone Lake, where visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until the hour of Mass. Interment with military honors will follow at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI.
