In Memory of Steven Magnuson
Steven "Steve-O" Gene Magnuson, 67, of Shell Lake passed away peacefully at home in the company of his loving family on July 10, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with CLL/Lymphoma cancer. Steve was born January 21, 1952, to Allen and Mary Jane (Werrick) Magnuson in Minneapolis, MN. He attended Bremer kindergarten, St. Bridget's Catholic School, Jordan Junior High and graduated from North High School. Steve excelled in sports. He played youth baseball and in high school was a specialist on high bar, placing first in diving in three competitions. At North High, gymnastics and diving were winter sports and students had to choose one or the other. A testimony to Steve's athleticism was that he was asked to participate in both. After high school, he continued playing ball as part of the Ventura Gym softball team.
Steve was introduced to Mary Ann "Mimi" Feidt of Cumberland over the phone in January of 1988 and that call resulted in their marriage on August 19, 1989, at the First United Methodist Church in Cumberland with Steve's cousin Pastor Judith Mattison officiating.
Steve spent his entire career (1973-2002) employed by the City of Minneapolis in the Public Works Department.
Steve started lifting weights and bodybuilding at the age of 27 at Ventura Gym in Minneapolis and competed in both. He won the Minnesota State Title in the Masters Weight Lifting Division in 1993 and again in 1998, setting a state record in the bench press. Steve continued lifting at his home gym until a few months ago.
Steve enjoyed art, painting, drawing, and most recently adult coloring. Halloween was one of his favorite times of the year. He would always dress up in costume and greet the children. His carved pumpkins and hand-painted and inscribed Styrofoam headstones would adorn the steps leading to the house door. At Christmas, the 28 village pieces hand-painted by Steve would be displayed for the enjoyment of visitors.
Steve's favorite past time was cycling and car/bike shows. At 19 he purchased and restored a 1947 Indian Chief motorcycle and also purchased a 1949 Indian Scout. The Chief has taken him on many rides with Antique Motorcycle Club members including two trips to Sturgis, SD. He earned many trophies and People's Choice Awards at shows. In addition, he and Mary Ann toured 28 states and parts of Canada mainly on Steve's 1976 Honda Gold Wing (yellow bumblebee bike). Steve purchased a 1971 Ford Galaxy in 1978 and has spent many hours detailing that car for shows and receiving several awards.
Steve is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Shell Lake; brother, Allen (Jackie) Magnuson of Spring Lake Park, MN; sister, Marilyn (Frank) Duffy of Champlin, MN and many brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. Steve was preceded in death by his parents. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 15, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Phil Juza officiating and a meal to follow in the church basement. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the Mass.
All memorials should be directed to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
