Seppo A. Sormunen, 74, of Duluth, MN died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 22, 2023 in Rice Lake, WI.

He was born in Joensuu, Finland in 1949.

When he was 10, Seppo moved with his parents from Finland to Winnipeg, MB. At age 15 they moved to Cloquet, MN where he graduated from high school. He then went on to receive his BA from Dartmouth. Afterwards he moved to Duluth, eventually finding his career as a health insurance agent. Seppo was a player, coach, volunteer, and administrator for activities including hockey, softball, golf, and curling. He was friendly to everyone he met, and truly cared for and created lasting bonds with so many people. Since retiring, Seppo has enjoyed spending time at the cabin in Cohasset with family, enjoying nature, or in the sauna.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Sormunen, children Aileen (Garrett) Geving and Grant (Emily) Sormunen, and his granddaughter Sienna Geving; as well as extended family.

Memorial Service will be held Monday, October 9, 2023 at the AAD Shrine Meeting & Event Center at 5152 Miller Trunk Hwy Hermantown, MN 55811. Visitation begins at 10:30 am, with service at 11:30 and lunch immediately following. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be mailed to the Duluth Curling Club at 327 Harbor Drive Duluth, MN 55802 or Charity of your choice in Seppo’s name. Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI is serving the family with the arrangements.
