Raymond “Rex” Schultz, age 79, a resident of Stone Lake, died at his home on Monday, October 14, 2019.

Rex was born on November 10, 1939, in Ashland, Wisconsin to parents Raymond and Lois (Haefs) Schultz.  He graduated from the Ashland Schools and also from Northland College in Ashland.  On December 26, 1964, Rex was united in marriage to Ardis Metcalf in Hayward.  Rex would go on to serve 38 years in the US Army and National Guard retiring in 1996.  Rex also worked part time as a deputy for the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department, an Officer for the City of Hayward Police Department, and also was a Game Warden for the DNR during popular hunting and fishing times.  During his life in the Hayward area he would volunteer and work in many capacities including: the American Birkebiner, Fishing Has No Boundaries, Fat Tire, Civil Air Patrol.  He also worked part time, up until a year ago, at the Air Communications of Wisconsin.  He also mentored our area’s youth by working with the Hunter’s Safety Program, Boater Safety Program, and Snowmobile Safety Program.  Rex also has a pilot’s license and even after health conditions wouldn’t allow him to fly, he still kept his plane in the hanger inspected and ready to fly “just in case.”

Rex in survived by his wife Ardis of Stone Lake, children: Jeff (Bonnie) Schultz, Greg Schultz, Ami (Kent) Slabaugh all of Stone Lake, 5 grandchildren: Justin, Dylan, Jake, Kelsy, Ethan, great granddaughter Mya, sister Carol (Ray) Thieman of Spooner, brother in law Dwight (Jenny) Metcalf of Stone Lake, sister in law Gladys Christman of Stone Lake, 7 nieces and 4 nephews, and many other family and friends.

Rex is preceded in death by his parents, brother William, and infant son Joseph.

Memorial services for Rex will be held on Friday, October 25, 2019, at 1pm, at the Hayward Wesleyan Church with Pastor Chad McCallum officiating.  A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, October 25, at the Church from 11-1pm.  Military Honors will follow at the Church.  Internment will occur at a later date at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner.
