In Memory of Nova Becherer
Nova Nadine Becherer, age 93, of Minong, WI, passed away on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Essentia Health – Miller Dwan Hospital in Duluth, MN. With family at her bedside.
Nova, who chose to be called Nadine, came into this world on October 30, 1928 in Morris, IL. born to parents Bert and Hilda (Newton) Miller. When Nadine was just 13 years old, the family moved to Sandwich, IL, a move that would set the young girl on a course in life she never imagined.
Nadine decided upon graduating high school to own and operate her very own beauty salon in Sandwich. And that she did. After beauticians school, she ran a successful salon for ten years. Then she met George Becherer.
On May 26, 1957, Nadine and George were married in Morris, IL and decided to honeymoon in Minong, WI at a two-cabin resort on Horseshoe Lake. That honeymoon never ended. George and Nadine bought the resort and lived out the rest of their lives there.
Far from owning a beauty salon, Nadine found herself running a resort while George worked for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. She also found time to raise eight children. Eventually the couple doubled the number of cabins as well as the size of the main house. Following the death of her beloved George, in 2001, Nadine ran Becherer’s Hideaway Resort on Becherer’s Drive with the frequent help of her grown sons and daughters. In all, Nadine lived at her honeymoon spot for over 60 years.
Nadine loved to be with family and friends. She was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Minong where she volunteered with the Sunday School program, Altar Guild, ACW, Christian Woman’s Group, Cottage Bible Study and Advent Bible Study. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, baking, bird watching, and going for pontoon rides. But best of all, she delighted in having her family enjoying the lake and beauty of their childhood home. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her. She was a current member of New Hope Church in Minong.
Nadine is survived by her eight children, Luan (Scott) Thomson of Stillwater, MN, Loy (Jill) Becherer of Minong, WI, Lori (Brian) Sorvik of Duluth, MN, Lorn (Rebecca Bell) Becherer of Golden Valley, MN, Lance Becherer of Minong, WI, Lee (Jimmie) Becherer of Minong, WI, Lisa (Bernie) Lee of Duluth, MN, Les (Gretchen) Becherer of Los Angles, CA; twenty-six grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marguerite Fowler; two nieces, two nephews and cousins.
Nadine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; and one brother, Loy Miller.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at the River Church in Minong, WI with Pastor Mike Main officiating. A time of gathering with the family will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Minong.
