In Memory of Mitchel J. Atkins


December 16, 1950 - September 29, 2023

Mitchel “Mitch” J. Atkins, age 72, of Rice Lake, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023 surrounded by his family.

Mitch was born on December 16, 1950 to Arden and Fanny (Little) Atkins in Durand, Wisconsin.

After graduating High School, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was later honorably discharged and a recipient of the Bronze Star Medal. After serving in the military, he attended the University of Wisconsin-EauClaire and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. On August 21, 1976 he was united in marriage to Donna Schwab. In his free time (when he wasn’t busy farming), he loved hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time with his grandkids. He always looked forward to helping his kids and grandkids at the Barron County Fair.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Donna; 2 daughters, Michelle (Larry) Kilcoyne and Valerie (Brian) Woods; 4 grand-children, Tyler (Amanda), Justin (Ashley), Benjamin and Brenden; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Mike (Julie) Atkins and Terry (Marilyn) Atkins; many nieces and nephews as well as other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom; a sister, Sue and his parents.

A prayer service will be held at 7PM Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Appleyards Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 4 from 4–7 PM. Interment will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 10AM at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in Spooner, Wisconsin where military rites will be accorded by the Rice Lake American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. A luncheon will be held at Cedar Lake Grill in Mikana, Wisconsin following the interment on Thursday October 5, 2023. All are welcome to attend in honor of Mitch. Arrangements were entrusted to Appleyards Home for Funerals.
