In Memory of Miles E. Miller


March 28, 1930 - February 7, 2023

Miles Erwin Miller, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital on February 7, 2023.

Miles was born to Erwin and Wilhelmina Miller on March 28, 1930 in Sarona, WI.

Moving with his family as a child to Shell Lake WI, Miles grew up there and graduated from Shell Lake High School in 1948. After high school, Miles attended college at the Superior State Teacher’s College (now UW-Superior) graduating in 1952 with a degree in education. Upon graduation, Miles enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for four years earning the rank of Lieutenant J.G. After military service, Miles pursued a career in education working as a teacher and coach for several schools including Richfield High School (MN) where he taught mathematics and computer science from 1960 until his retirement in 1991.

While teaching at Richfield Public Schools, Miles met and married Lois (Nordby) Miller in 1963. Miles and Lois would remain together for 57 years until her death in 2020.

Miles had many interests and hobbies. He loved sports and athletics particularly football and baseball, being a diehard fan of the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. He also enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing and working on the family hunting land. Miles was also a prolific reader and enjoyed spending time at the lake with family and friends.

Miles is survived by two sons, Hugh (Vicki) Miller of Shell Lake, WI, and Matt (Lori) Miller of Hugo, MN; five grandchildren: Drew Miller, Devan Miller, Jana Miller, Haley Miller and Rachel Miller along with several nieces and nephews. Miles was preceded in death by his wife Lois, both parents, two sisters (Reita Andrea and Wanda Bengs) and two brothers (Hugh and Ray).

When arrangements are finalized, a service for Miles will be held later this spring at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mile’s family requests a memorial in his name to the Alzheimer's Association alz.org.
