In Memory of Matthew W. Butzer

April 1, 1968 - November 21, 2024

Matthew W Butzer was born prematurely on April 1, 1968, no joke.

He grew up in Mankato, MN riding motocross bikes, snowmobiles or anything that would go fast. Also, working many jobs from a young age and playing football. He graduated from Mankato West, which is best, in 1986 and promptly moved to Colorado to work construction, ski, and do general Matt shenanigans. After he came back to MN, he worked various jobs including Marty’s Pizza and the City of North Mankato. In May of 1989, he joined the U.S. Navy as many of his other relatives had. He proudly served on the USS Sierra out of Charleston, SC during the Gulf War and learned the electrical trade. Chippewa Valley Technical College was Matt’s next stop. He completed the Electrical Power Distribution program and was hired by NSP as a meter reader and moved to Amery, WI. Matt then became a power lineman and worked for NSP and later Xcel Energy for 22 years.

He loved Amery and played softball there, as well as was a member of the Amery Fire Department. Matt loved tree frogs, bird watching, his Michigan Wolverines, the Vikings, Tom Brady, vegetables, camping and ATVing, and finding mud and getting stuck. He was also a hunter and fisherman. Some of the things he disliked were Pink Floyd, vacuum cleaner noise, ASPCA commercials, and someone who talked too much. Anyone who knew him would find that hilarious!

We will miss the, “Have I told you this story?” and his joke telling and laughter. The way he made everything an adventure and how he made friends everywhere. He could really be a pain in the ass, but also generous and fun loving. We will all be a little dumber without him as he would always tell us obscure facts about literally everything—and we always fact checked him.

Matt passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Waiting for Matt to continue shenanigans in Heaven are his parents, Matt & Carol, along with many friends and family. Hopefully everyone is prepared.

Left to mourn and miss him are his wife, Julie Gorres; step-kids, Corey Measner & Tess, Cassidy & Garrett Janis and Weston; Chase & Becca Measner and Ellie, Addie & Steven; sisters, Anne Butzer & Scott Spargo and Mara Butzer & Mike Hanson; also, many friends and relatives—and who could forget Chubbs LaRoux, faithful, frustrating, furry companion.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Amery VFW on December 7, 2024 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm with Military Honors at 3:00 pm.
