In Memory of Marion Shattuck


July 1, 1922 - May 12, 2019

Marion Alice Shattuck, age 96, died on Sunday, May 12, 2019, surrounded by loved ones, at the Indianhead Medical Center, Shell Lake, Wisconsin.

Marion Alice Korbel was born on July 1, 1922 to Alice Janz Korbel and August W. Korbel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Marion grew up in Milwaukee and attended Bay View High School.  She then attended college at Whitewater State College where she met the love of her life Bruce Shattuck.  Being the lovely and admired woman Marion was, she was selected to be Whitewater’s Prom Queen.

From 1941 until 1946, Marion and Bruce continued their relationship corresponding by mail while Bruce served in the Army/Air Force.  During the war time, Marion attended classes at Milwaukee State College as well as taking nurses training.  In 1946 she married Bruce when he returned from his tour in Europe.  They moved to Frederic to make that their home of 67 years until Bruce passed away in 2013, and she moved to Shell Lake a year later.  Marion was a dedicated family woman, creating a loving home for Bruce and her two sons, as the “classic” stay at home mom.  During her years in Frederic she served in numerous volunteer positions within the community and was a member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church.  Marion was a generous and welcoming person who loved to correspond by mail with the most beautiful handwriting.  Marion and her three “guys” spent many years camping and fishing in Canada, travelling throughout the United States, even Alaska, with her family and dogs.

Marion is survived by her brother Richard Korbel of Peoria, Arizona; two sons:  Jim (Kathy) Shattuck of Trego, and Jerry (Bonnie) Shattuck of Middleton; six grandchildren: Lexi (Jamin) Miles of Brookfield, Thomas (Brittney) Shattuck of Denver, Colorado, Mike Shattuck of Verona, Kelly (Brad) Meinholz of Cross Plains, Dawn (Bill) Young of Oregon, and Jennifer (Mike) Grudzinski of Mt. Horeb;
twelve great-grandchildren:  Henry, Evelyn, and Alex Miles , Swayze and A.J. Shattuck, Isabel and Luca Grudzinski, Olivia, Sydney and CJ Young, Skylar and Cody Meinholz; and nephew Jason (Michelle) Korbel of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.  Marion was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, and her parents.

A memorial gathering and short service for family and friends will take place at the Northern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, where her ashes will be interred with Bruce’s.  The memorial service will be this summer with the date and time to be determined.  Memorials may be directed to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary,  N2384 Hunt Hill Rd. Shell Lake, Wi. 54870.
