In Memory of Lowell A. Wohlk
Lowell August Wohlk, 89, of Almena died on February 5, 2024, at Dove Healthcare. He was born August 26, 1934, in Almena, WI to August and Mathilda (Kunkel) Wohlk. He was married in Almena, WI on May 12, 1962, to Shirley Westlund who preceded him in death on May 3, 2008.
Lowell was drafted right out of high school and served during the Korean Conflict. After his service he worked various jobs including having his own fuel truck. He also worked as a prison guard at Waupun Correctional Institution for a time until his employment and later retirement from AMPI in Turtle Lake.
He volunteered with the Almena Fire Department for 42 years. Lowell was a life long member of the Almena VFW and of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He served on a number of community boards including the Veteran Service, Almena Housing, Mosaic, and many more community organizations. He also volunteered numerous treasured hours with the Barron School District; including gifting yearly scholarships. Lowell cherished any opportunity to offer support to not only his kids and grandkids but those of the community. His lasting impact will be felt for many generations to come.
He is survived by his son, Vince (Michelle) Wohlk of Almena; their children: Tyler (Molly) Wohlk, Elyse (Nathan) Anderson, Derek Wohlk, Jacob Wohlk, and Alison Wohlk: their grandchildren: Parker Wohlk, Charlie Wohlk, Ezra and Nehemiah Anderson; daughter, Amy (Tim) Hanson of Barron; their children: Alanna (Kyle) Rosen, Dylan (Tessa) Hanson, and Faith Hanson; their grandchildren: Brennen Hanson, Kinsley and Ashlynn Rosen; sister, Sylvia Frie of Cumberland; brother, LeRoy Wohlk of Cameron; brother-in-law, Dale (Kay) Westlund of Minong, many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Lowell was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Wohlk; sister, Violet Hall; brother, Duane Wohlk, and infant brother, Arlo.
In lieu of flowers, Lowell requested that memorial be gifted to the Barron Area Education Foundation and mailed to PO Box 271 Barron, WI 54812
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Almena, WI with Pastor Paul Mundinger officiating. Burial will be at 3 PM in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Spooner, WI. Military honors will be accorded by the Almena Legion. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024, at Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland and one hour before the church service.
