In Memory of Lorraine M. Coulombe

April 1, 1930 - March 19, 2024

Lorraine Marie Coulombe, 93, of Turtle Lake died March 19, 2024, at her home.

She was born April 1, 1930, in Cook County, IL to George and Marie (Laconic) Sollman, Sr. In her early years, she grew up on a farm and attended school in the Clayton area. On Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1947, she was married to Irvin Coulombe and they celebrated 56 years together.

Her first job began at the age of 16, when she took a train to Chicago and worked for Montgomery Ward while staying with relatives. In the following years she worked various jobs, including Jerome Foods, Stokely’s Canning, Benneman’s Nite Club, Fabri-Tek, and finally Hartzell’s Manufacturing, where she retired in 1995 after working there 18 years. Lorraine’s strong work ethic could be seen in her many late evenings preparing food for holidays, caring for her six children, and being considered “Mom” to many more.

Before and after retirement, Lorraine and Irvin enjoyed several bus tours across the United States, camping, going to flea markets and attending country music festivals. At 13 years old, she was preparing meals for neighbors who helped with the harvest season. This skill carried on, for no one ever left her house hungry or without food to go. “Grandma’s spaghetti”, dill pickles, lemon bars and other desserts, among many other dishes could always be found at a family gathering, She found great pleasure in growing flowers, plants and vegetables (at one time having three gardens). One of her favorite pass times was staying active with her brother and nephew in the fall with the Threshing Bee. Sending cards, canning, cooking and baking aromas will be forever linked to our memory of Mom.

She is survived by her three sons: Thomas J. Coulombe of Minnetonka, MN, Edward M. Coulombe of Barnes, and Robert R. Coulombe of Rice Lake, three daughters: Linda (Roger) Hubbard of Cameron, Betty (Craig) Hohlfeld of Turtle Lake, and Carol K. Coulombe of Holmen; eight grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; brother, George (Harriet) Sollman; many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her daughter, Janice; husband, Irvin; grandchildren: Angela Coulombe; great granddaughter, Ariel Briese; great grandson, Jordan Coulombe; and brother, Richard (Shirley) Sollman.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at St. Ann Catholic Church, Turtle Lake. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Turtle Lake. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Monday, March 25, 2024, at Skinner Funeral Home in Turtle Lake, and one hour before the mass. Pallbearers are Bill Scribner, Tim Sollman, Scott Sollman, Cory Coulombe, Luke Hohlfeld, Travis Moin, Brian Leisz, and David Sollman.

Skinner Funeral Home of Turtle Lake is serving the family.
