In Memory of Kenneth Shuey

March 10, 1955 - November 11, 2019

Kenneth W. Shuey age 64, of Hayward, WI died Monday, November 11, 2019 at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN.

Kenneth William Shuey was born March 10, 1955 in Freeport, IL the son of James and Esther (Otte) Shuey. He was joined in marriage to Jeannine (Oppold) Shuey on August 23, 1975 on Willow Lake in Freeport, Illinois. In 1978 Ken and Jeanne moved to the Hayward area. He was a skilled Carpenter and General Contractor for over 40 years and left his mark on several homes and cabins in the area. Ken also ran a Cranberry Farm for several years. Over the past 10 years he worked in the Maintenance department at the Sawyer County Courthouse where his co-workers became family. Ken served on the Bass Lake Volunteer Fire Department for 27 years several of those as Fire Chief. Ken was also very involved in the First Congregational Church where he was a member of the choir for several years. He always put everyone else before himself; always one to lend a hand, Ken lived out God’s commandment to Love your neighbor as yourself. He knew no strangers only friends, his easy smile and great sense of humor endeared him to everyone he met. Ken enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and was an avid sports fan. It was not unusual to find him working on a project and listening to the Milwaukee Brewers or the Hayward Hurricanes on the radio. Ken’s greatest joy was found in his family his wife Jeanne, daughter Emily Shuey, daughter Carrie and Son-in law Jake Wookey. He especially loved being “Grandpa” to his special buddy George Taylor. He showed us his true strength in the last year and a half as he fought cancer still smiling and always positive. Ken was quick to make jokes and never one to stay idle and kept working on his “projects” until the end. He instilled within all of us love and values that will carry us on. Ken will be dearly missed and always in our hearts.

He is survived by his wife Jeanne; daughters Carrie (Jake) Wookey and Emily Shuey; grandson George Taylor; brother Thomas (Victoria) Shuey, brother David (Lou Ellen) Shuey, step- brother Robert (Martha) Oppold, sister Kathleen (Robert) Lamm, step-brother Kenner (Betsey) Oppold, brother Timothy Shuey, step-brother Charles Oppold, sister Anna (Brad) Winesburg; and many nieces and nephews.

Ken is preceded in death by mother Esther (Otte) Shuey, father James Hobart Shuey, step-mother Dorothy (Van Raalte) Shuey   and step-brother Carl Oppold.
