In Memory of Karl F. Oemig

November 14, 1935 - September 19, 2023

Karl Fredrick Oemig, 87 of Shell Lake, WI, passed away on Tuesday evening September 19th, 2023, from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease at Cambridge Memory Care in Rice Lake.

Karl was born on November 14, 1935, to Paul and Rachel Oemig in Stanley and grew up on the family farm.

A couple years after graduating from high school, Karl married Marcella Sloviak on August 31, 1957, and just recently they celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. In 1958, they welcomed their first child, a daughter Jean, followed by Brad in 1960, Jon in 1963, and Sonya in 1969.

Karl worked at Uniroyal in Eau Claire for 25 years before taking an early retirement when the plant relocated out of state. Looking at Karl’s gnarly fingers you can just imagine the physical labor involved with his job. Even at age 87 he had a grip and strength you wouldn’t think possible.

Karl loved hunting, fishing, and camping but mainly just enjoyed the great outdoors. He loved to talk about the connection he seemed to have with animals. A favorite pastime for him and Marcy was to sit out in their four-season porch watching the deer frolicking and stealing the fruit from the abundance of apple trees it their backyard.

Karl’s faith was another passion in his life, and he was excited to share that passion with anyone he could.

Karl is survived by his wife Marcella, children Jean (Walt) Henning, Brad (Amy) Oemig, Jon Oemig, and Sonya (Derek) Gillingham, one sister Elsa Eichelt, 13 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents Paul and Rachel, two brothers Paul and Frank, two sisters Faith and Caroline, and one grandson Joseph.

The family wishes to thank the many family members and friends, the caregivers at Cambridge Memory Care and Luther Hospital 5th floor in Eau Claire for the visits, care, and comfort given Karl and Marcy as they navigated the “Long Goodbye” associated with Alzheimer’s.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 7 at 1:00 pm, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, W7186 Lonestar Road, Shell Lake.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to remember to keep Marcy in your thoughts and prayers in the days to come and give her a call or stop out and pay her a visit.
