Karen Caroline Schmitz, 80, of Cumberland died Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Sacred Heart Hospital.

She was born September 28, 1940 in Northfield, MN to Milton and Estella (Ehlers) Betzold.

She was married on February 6, 1965 to Lawrence Schmitz who preceded her in death on September 14, 2009.

Karen loved quilting, garage sale-ing, spending time with her grandchildren, and gardening. She could often be found volunteering at the local hospital as a greeter and working in the gift shop.

She is survived by her two sons, Jon Schmitz of Cumberland, Patrick (Jana) Schmitz of Cumberland; daughter, Anne (Gary) Nyhus of Cumberland; six grandchildren, Jordan (Chad) Ullrich, Taylor (Brian) Marshall, Zachary (Molly Boe) Nyhus, Payton Nyhus, Emily and Erin Schmitz; two great grandchildren: Berkley Ullrich and Ezra Marshall; siblings: Ken (Kathy) Betzold, Richard (Pat) Betzold, Ron (Linda) Betzold, and Lynda (Warren) Wille; nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry; and her parents, Milton and Stella Betzold.

A private family service will be live-streamed at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 2, 2021 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Father Tom Thompson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Pallbearers are Jordan Ullrich, Taylor Marshall, Zachary Nyhus, Payton Nyhus, Emily Schmitz and Erin Schmitz.

Public visitation will be from 4-7 PM Friday, January 1, 2021 at Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland; and for one hour before the service.
