In Memory of Joyce Bertelsen


August 31, 1934 - July 26, 2020

Joyce Illene Bertelsen passed away on July 26, 2020, at her home. She was born August 31, 1934, in Rice Lake to Dorothy and Carl Segerstrom. She had a brother that died in infancy and an older brother, George, who preceded her.

She was married February 5, 1955, to James Bertelsen who preceded her in death in 2005. They farmed in the Section Ten area until her husband’s health declined.

Joyce worked outside the home all her life starting at 17 year old at GTE until she retired and then not content to stay retired she worked at Walmart as a cashier for 20 years until she was 82 when she was forced to retire due to a stroke. She enjoyed talking to the customers and was very social.

Joyce is survived by her four children: Sandra Polzin of Rice Lake, Theresa(Frank) Hayton of Cumberland, Dennis(Patti Jo) Bertelsen, and Brian(Sandy) Bertelsen of Cumberland; grandchildren: Nathan(Kristy) Painter of DePere, Joel(fiancée Barbara) Vold of San Angelo, TX, Mathew Vold of Belgrade, MT, Marc(Nicolle) Hayton of Cameron, David(Melinda) Kelley of Cameron, Mary Kelley of Bruce, Melanie(Ian) Schara of Cumberland, Randy Bertelsen of Cumberland, great grandchildren: Jackson, Andrew, Kathryn, Anthony, William, Violet, Jace and Kinzly. Also niece Judy Barrett of Orange, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday, August 3, 2020, outside of First Lutheran Church with Pastor Tim Schmidt officiating. Please join us either in your vehicle or in your lawnchair on the grass. Burial will be in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at 10 AM Tuesday, August 4, 2020. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM Sunday, August 2, 2020, at Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland.

To ensure the safety of all in attendance, face masks are required while inside of the funeral home and no more than 25 people will be allowed in the building at any one time. Sanitizer will be provided.

Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is serving the family.
