In Memory of John E. Helbig

September 2, 1942 - June 10, 2024

John Edward Helbig, 81, of Comstock passed away on Monday, June 10th, 2024 at his home surrounded by family. John was born September 2, 1942 in Amery, WI to Charles and Julia (Anderson) Helbig.

He was married in Pipe Lake on August 2, 2005 to Ellen Marie (Letellier) Schultz.

Those who knew John knew his love for riding mules, especially out West. He was also a member of two saddle clubs, and when he wasn't riding, he could be found spectating the bucking horse sales and mule shows. John was very happy when spending time at Pipe Lake with family. And of course, we can't forget his passion for creating what the boys lovingly referred to as “junk out of junk”. Jokes aside, he was a resourceful woodworker - building anything you can think of, including many wind chimes, and flag cases for over 200 fellow veterans.

John leaves behind wife, Ellen of Comstock; 2 sons, John C. Helbig of Pine River and Robert L. Helbig of Amery; stepchildren, Eric (Sam) Cress of Ham Lake and Ed Cress of New Richmond; grandchildren, Natasha, Kyle (Kristie), Mason, Isaac, Ashley, and Mackenzie; great-grandchildren, Layne, Heath, Evelyn, and John; and sister, Jane (Joe) Miller of Chetek.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Julia; and siblings, Charles Scott Helbig, James Helbig and Nancy Slater.

A visitation will be held from 3 PM - 7PM on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Skinner Funeral Home, 260 Industrial Ave. Turtle Lake.

Interment will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Skinner Funeral Home of Turtle Lake is serving the family.
