John A. Poppe, age 82, of Hayward, WI passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, WI.

John Allen Poppe was born June 15, 1940, in Highbridge, WI the son of Noel and Olivia (Uitto) Poppe.

He attended school in Mellen, WI and graduated from high school there in 1958. He continued his education at Northland College in Ashland, WI and then Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba, MI. John was joined in marriage to Maxine Ann Suni on August 17, 1963, in Marengo, WI. John began working for Thorp Finance and worked in Ashland, Superior, Fredric, Ladysmith, WI and Mount Pleasant, IA. He then began work for Goodman Company in Goodman, WI and Escanaba, MI. While working for Goodman, John and his family moved to North Bay, Ontario Canada to set up the accounting department for the Canadian division. Later John and his family moved back to Escanaba, MI where Goodman was acquired by Louisiana Pacific and he became a purchasing agent which eventually brought them to Hayward, WI in 1981. John then took a position with Lakewoods Resort in Cable, WI as a Business Manager where he retired in 2002. Throughout John’s life he had been an avid sports fan and enjoyed going to all kinds of sporting events from professional to local games. John was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Hayward.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maxine; two sons, Allen Poppe of Madison, WI, Duane Poppe of Osseo, MN; five grandchildren, Alec, Tyler (Lauren), Grace, Noah and Eva; siblings, Olivia Meyer, Mary Jane Holland, both of West Bend, WI, Henry “Hank” Poppe of Hibbing, MN, Noel “JR” Poppe of Rockford, IL; sisters in law, Joyce Poppe and Bonita (George) Shubat.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, Lavern Poppe; three brothers, Marvin, Roger and Ralph Poppe.

A memorial service will be held for John at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 13th, 2022 at the First Lutheran Church in Hayward with Pastor Joel Bacon officiating.

A time of gathering with family and friends will be held for John from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Interment will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Highbridge, WI.
