In Memory of Jay Fassbender


July 4, 1924 - September 14, 2019

Loran Jay Fassbender, 95, Long time Barron County resident, passed from this life to his eternal life on Saturday, September 14, 2019.  At the time of his death, Jay was a resident of Dove Healthcare – West in Eau Claire.

Jay was born in Patch Grove, Wisconsin on July 4, 1924.  He was the third of seven children born to James and Neva (Rockwell) Fassbender.  He attended Mount Hope High School and graduated in 1942. While in High School, he met his future wife, Frances (Frankie) Gorton and they were married on June 3, 1942 and relocated to Bloomer, Wisconsin.

Jay served in the Army air Corps in Europe from May of 1943 until July 1945.  Upon his discharge he returned to Wisconsin to resume civilian life. 

Jay and Frankie farmed in Sioux Creek Township for several years before Jay took a Job as “Fieldman” for the Ridgeland Coop Creamery.  This job led to a career in agriculture service and in 1964, Jay accepted a job as “Milk Inspector” with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, a job he held for 25 years, retiring in 1989.  Jay was an avid gardener who enjoyed hunting and fishing, raising Registered  Shorthorn beef cattle, raising honey bees and traveling throughout the US and Canada.  He was a fan of both the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers.

Jay  is survived by two sons; Ron (Tere) of Kewaunee, WI and Bob (Sharon) of De Pere, WI.  Five grandchildren; Tom (Samantha) Fassbender of Los Angeles, CA, Mark Fassbender of London, England, Carla Kazura (Scott) of Cleveland, NC, Laura Curran (Mike) of Cross Plains, WI, and Jennifer Fassbender of New York, NY.  Four great grandchildren; Francesca and Jacqueline Fassbender of Los Angeles and Ella and Anna Curran of Cross Plains, WI.  Jay is also survived by brothers Delbert Fassbender of Janesville, WI and John (Sharon) Fassbender of Middleton, WI and sister Janet Quale of Jefferson, WI as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jay is preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Frankie, Two brothers, Richard and Charles, and one sister Janice

Jay has requested a private graveside service which will be held on October 3.  Internment will be at Otterholt Cemetery in Prairie Lake Township.

The Burnham-Ours-Kolstad Family Funeral Home of Chetek, Wisconsin has been entrusted with arrangements.
