In Memory of Jason A. Rainey


January 30, 1982 - August 22, 2024

Jason Allen Rainey "Nishogabaw" (Third Stander), age 42 passed unexpectedly on August 22, 2024 at Hennepin County Medical Center. He was born on January 30,1982 to Bruce and Jean (Rainey) Sonnenberg.

Jason was raised in a loving environment, spending a lot of time with his grandparents, aunts, and uncles. He had respect for his elders, and even took care of some of his extended family members in Minneapolis. He had a strong love for his dog, Cheppa. Last, he loved singing at powwows with his brothers, cousins, and father.

He is survived by his father, Bruce Allen (Caroline) Sonnenberg; siblings, Tonya Jean Rainey, Conrad Lee Rainey, Bruce Charles Rainey, George Henry Rainey, William Joseph Rainey, Andrew Jack Sonnenberg, Amanda Jean Sonnenberg, Autumn Lynn Sonnenberg, Michael Kenneth Rainey, Christifer James Sonnenberg, and Patricia Ann Sonnenberg; wife, Elizabeth Big Bear; auntie, Aysia Lynn Garvin; uncle, Jeremy Littlepipe; beloved dog, Cheppa; and many other relatives, cousins, and drum brothers.

Jason was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Annette (Rainey) Sonnenberg; grandparents, Merle Decorah, Betty Littlepipe Decorah, Andrew Baptiste, and Lucille Barrette Rainey; and aunt, Mary Washington.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 25 at Maple Plain Community Center with Vince Merrill officiating. Burial will be in Maple Plain Reserve Cemetery. Pallbearers are Nate Viellieux, Joseph Potter, Matt Estebo Jr., James Merrill, Harold Rainey Jr., Aaron Hart.

Honorary pallbearers are Alicia Roberts, Nicole Mason, Mike Fickbohm, Nana Browneagle, Matthew Portra, and Wilbur Hatch.

Visitation will begin at 2 PM on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at Maple Plain Community Center.

Skinner Funeral Home of Cumberland is serving the family.
