In Memory of Janice Altmann


December 19, 1938 - July 13, 2019

Janice “Jan” Mary (Moldenhauer) Altmann, age 80, a resident of Chisago City, MN died Saturday, July 13, 2019, with her children at her side. Janice was born to Ilene Moldenhauer on December 19, 1938 in St. Paul, MN. She attended St. Stanislaus, St. Columba, and Wilson High School. Jan participated in on-the-job training during high school and worked at Patterson Dental Supply. She then took on a position at the U of M while her high school sweetheart Jim was in college, so they could still be together. Jan married Jim in 1959 and then moved to Huron, South Dakota.  After living in several cities over the years, she and her family eventually moved to Center City, MN. Jan and her husband owned and operated restaurants in St. Paul (Elevated Cafeteria, and Wabasha Deli and Cafe) and Center City (County Seat Cafe). 

Most recently, Jan was very active at Parmly on the Lake, where she was the Resident Council President.  She also lead prayer circle, and was known for her visits while delivering the weekly menus. She built many special friendships with staff and visitors.  She always had a smile and a positive thought to share with everyone. 

Prior to living at Parmly, she was blessed with many good friends at her home in Wyoming, MN. 

Jan loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always enjoyed the outdoors, loved to read, enjoyed winning at cribbage and bingo, and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and the Lynx.  She was a long-time member of St. Bridget of Sweden’s Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Michael, grandson Joshua Henstein, mother, and her sisters Judy Cerini and Jean Reinhart.

Jan is survived by her twin sister, Jackie, brother Stanley, and children Karen (Fred) Staley, Mark (Sue) Altmann, Sandra (Ben) Henstein, Rob (Lynn) Altmann, and Melissa Altmann; her 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; and other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 2:30 PM (visitation 1-2:30 PM) at the Parmly on the Lake, Chisago City. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family. Arrangements were entrusted to Swedberg-Taylor Family Funeral Home, Webster, Wisconsin
