In Memory of Howard Sonnenberg


January 13, 1933 - May 18, 2019

Howard D. Sonnenberg, age 86 of Evansville, WI, formerly of Reedsburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 18, 2019, surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 13, 1933 in LaValle, WI, the son of Howard E. and Laura (Small) Sonnenberg. On August 23, 1952 he was united in marriage to Barbara K. Briggs in Wonewoc. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea and Japan during the Korean Conflict. He went into business with his father as a carpenter with Sonnenberg Building Supply. At the age of 35, Howard went back to school, earning his Master’s Degree and taught for 18 years at the Wisconsin Indian Technical College. In 1995 he retired as an Associate Dean at Moraine Park Technical College. Following retirement, he and Barbara spent 23 years in Florida before moving back to Wisconsin. He was a charter member of the Reedsburg Jaycees, former Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club in Rice Lake, and a member of the American Legion and VFW serving with the military honor’s group. Howard had been a former member of St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Reedsburg. He was a man of strong character who cherished the time he spent with his family and friends. Howard was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. He was very proud to have been a part of the Badger Honor Flight in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Evansville; daughter, Holly (Steven) Meyer of Evansville, son Jeffrey (Carol Dodge) Sonnenberg of Mauston; two grandchildren, Adam and Justine; a great-grandchild, Jehzelle; brother James Sonnenberg in Arizona; brother-in-law, Wayne Lankey of Kaukauna; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends. Howard was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Delores Almerli, Carol Anderson and Diana Lankey.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30PM Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the Farber Funeral Home in Reedsburg, WI with Chaplain Dan Farber officiating. Military honors will be held at the funeral home following the service. There will be a visitation on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
