In Memory of Howard Madson


January 28, 1929 - September 16, 2019

Howard C. Madson, age 90, of Chetek, WI, passed away on Monday, September 16, 2019 surrounded by his family at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.

Howard was born January 28, 1929 in Emmons, MN, the son of Clarence and Eva Madson.  He was baptized and confirmed at Emmons Lutheran Church, and graduated from Emmons High School in 1947.

He attended Waldorf College at Forest City, IA, and in April 1949, he married Carol L. Muller of Blooming Prairie, MN, who was a nursing student at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea.  In June, 1949, he joined the National Guard and served his country as Sgt. Howard C. Madson.

After an honorable discharge from the Army, Howard settled in Albert Lea with his wife, Carol and family to begin a 20 year career in retail management with J.C. Penney.  He managed retail stores in Iowa and Wisconsin, and in 1978, started his own business, that was Madson’s Coast to Coast Hardware Store in Barron. 

After retirement, Howard and Carol relocated to Chetek in 2008. 

His love for the outdoors and fishing stayed with him through the years.  Family and their well-being was of the utmost importance to him and he always supported their endeavors.

Howard is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carol of Chetek; his son, Ralph (Cindy) Madson of Island Lake, WI; his daughters, Dianne Benning of Goldendale, WA and Nancy (Jeffrey) Young of Vicksburg, MI; 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild; brothers, Robert Madson of White Bear Lake, MN, Charles (Judy) Madson of Ventura, IA and Gary (Kate) Madson of Long Lake, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Jon Madson and his brother, Duane Madson.

Funeral services for Howard Madson will be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 12:00 noon at Chetek Lutheran Church in Chetek with Rev. Guy Redfield officiating.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday morning.  Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Wayside Cemetery in Barron with military honors.
