In Memory of Gerald R. 'Jerry' Smith
Gerald R. “Jerry” Smith, 88, formerly of PawPaw IL, died Tuesday morning August 13, 2024 at Homestead Health Service, New Holstein.
He was born September 17, 1935 in Indiana, son of the late Gerald and Mildred (Barger) Smith. Jerry was a 1953 graduate of Glenbard West High School. He furthered his education at Valparaiso Technical Institute with a degree in Radio and Television Production. Jerry worked for 41 years until his retirement as a radio and television engineer for ABC Television / Disney Corporation.
In 1957 he married the former Mary Lou Irmis in Glen Ellyn IL, they shared 51 years together until she preceded him in death in 2008. Jerry later married Laura Lundgren and she preceded him in death. In his free time he enjoyed working with his horses and hunting dogs. He was an avid grouse hunter and trap shooter. He enjoyed time outdoors especially time spent at the cabin in the Hayward Lakes area. Jerry was a Master Mason and active member of the Glen Ellyn Masonic Lodge Post 950 and was know by W9RXP to his fellow HAM radio operators.
Survivors include his two sons; Perry (Lisa) Smith of Tucson, AZ, Tim (Patti) Smith of Kiel, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren with one on the way. Jerry is further survived by a brother; Ed (Diane) Smith of Downers Grove, IL along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his 2 wives.
According to his wishes, private family services will be held at a later date at Stone Lake Evergreen Cemetery.
Jerry's family would like to thank the caring staff at Homestead Health Center and Calumet County Hospice for keeping Jerry comfortable in his last days. They would also like to thank close friends and longtime neighbors, John and Patsy Marks for all their friendship and care over the many years.
