In Memory of Gary R. Larson


January 7, 1947 - February 24, 2024

Gary Roy Larson, age 77, of Hayward, WI and formerly of Superior, WI passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at his home.

Gary Roy Larson was born January 7, 1947, in Superior, WI the son of LeRoy and Doris (Letsos) Larson.

He was raised in Superior where he attended school and enjoyed playing football in his youth. He graduated from Denfeld High School and then joined the U.S. Navy on November 30, 1965. Gary served during the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal. Gary was honorably discharged on September 2, 1969, and returned to Superior, WI. Gary began firefighter training at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College where he received an associate’s degree. After his schooling, Gary began a career with the Superior Fire Department. During his years as a firefighter, he was promoted to Captain. On December 21, 2005, Gary was joined in marriage to Catherine Lee in Superior. Gary and Catherine moved to Hayward, WI after his retirement from the fire department. Gary continued to work part-time as a bartender for Karibalis Restaurant and the Flat Creek Eatery in Hayward. He was an avid hunter who enjoyed traveling west to hunt for Elk. He also enjoyed fishing on Lake Superior for Lake Trout and was a Minnesota Vikings fan.

Gary is survived by his wife, Catherine; three children, Michelle (Kevin) Peterson of Greenville, SC, Atticus (Mary) Larson of Superior, WI, Betsy Hall of LaCrosse, WI; and four grandchildren, Brendan, Aya, Lexi and Harper.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Military honors will be held for Gary at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, 2024, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church parking lot in Hayward. A celebration of life will follow the honors at Out of the Wood Winery until 5:00 p.m.
