In Memory of Emory L. Giles

February 12, 1930 - June 14, 2022

Emory Lincoln Giles of Frederic, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June, 14, 2022 at the age of 92.

Emory and his twin brother Robert were born in 1930 to parents Arthur and Hilda (Johnson) Giles of Siren. Emory graduated from a one room school house outside of Siren and spent a short time in the service. He then began his never-ending journey in furthering his education, investing well over 10 years obtaining numerous college degrees including a PHD all the while working and supporting a family.

Locally Emory will be remembered in Frederic as a beloved teacher, principal and superintendent.

During his journey through life there are simply too many stops and accomplishments to cover. From helping build a school system in Saudi Arabia to Florida where he worked for many years and met the loving mother of his stepchildren. They later moved to Wheaton, IL where Emory finally put down roots and spent the rest of his career working for The National Chiropractic College.

In the mid 1990’s Emory returned to Frederic to “retire”, which was always kind of a family joke as everyone knew he would never quit working. He got extensively involved with the Frederic Historical Society as well as the school and other village projects.

Once Emory was done practically rebuilding his retirement home in Frederic from scratch, he finally started to relax a bit, enjoying gardening, travel and spending time with a very treasured friend, Joyce.

Emory was able to live a very active and independent life that most 50-year olds would envy, until a couple of years ago when he got an infection which traveled to his brain and required surgery.

Finishing his days at Lawson Manor in Luck, while not his ideal end, as always in life he made the best of it and loved the staff and they loved him too.

Emory was preceded in death by his children, Kevin Giles and Jeanne (Giles) Matz; Parents, Arthur and Hilda Giles; Siblings, Alesi Tjader, Faith Giles, June Klein, Marlys “Bernie” Karl, Carol Karl Johnson, Gardner Giles and Robert Giles

He is survived by stepchildren, Robert Richardson and Jen Richards; Grandchildren, Michael Giles and Jacob Matz along with many nephews and nieces whom loved and cared for him.

A small private burial service was held on Monday, June 20 at Spooner Veterans Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held around 1 year from the anniversary of his passing in 2023.
