In Memory of Edward J. Grant
Edward Joseph "Butch" Grant Jr., age 68, of Cumberland, went to his Heavenly home on June 5, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, surrounded by his siblings. He was born September 14, 1955 in Ashland, WI to Edward and Evelyn (Jewett) Grant.
Ed enjoyed his youth with friends and family in both Ashland, WI and Ketchikan, AK. He was a star baseball player through little league and Babe Ruth, maintaining a .500 batting average. He was a very skilled pitcher and 3rd baseman. Ed hit many homeruns, including a tournament-winning grand slam!
Not long after his family moved to Cumberland, WI, their father passed away, suddenly, leaving Ed (age 18) as the “man of the family”. He faithfully served his mother and siblings in many roles, including provider and protector. He remained his mother’s primary caregiver until her passing in 1999. His siblings, Fred, Rochelle and Laura, greatly appreciate and respect his selfless devotion to his family. They fondly remember him as their brother who played games, teased and joked around, and drove them anywhere they needed to go before and after he taught them each to drive!
Ed was married in Cumberland, WI on December 28, 1996 to the love of his life, Judith (Mewhorter) Grant who preceded him in death on June 12, 2019. They met and worked side by side at Aurora Community Services for many years. Ed and Judy enjoyed vacations to Ashland and Lake Superior, as well as to their stay-cation camper at Country Quiet Campground just outside of Cumberland.Together, they grew closer to God and deeper in love. They were baptized together in July 2017.
Ed will be remembered for his sense of humor and kind and caring heart. He was sweet and always appreciated any cares he received from family, doctors, nurses, dialysis team and transportation drivers, to name just a few. One of his ways of expressing his love for you was to always tell you to “drive careful” when you were leaving. Though he endured many challenging and uncomfortable health conditions the past several years, he was fully cared for, and all his needs were met by the grace of God. He was tired, and he let it be known that he believed “it was time”. Ed and his siblings were blessed with a couple of hours of quality and memorable moments together before saying “see ya later”.
Ed will be dearly missed by brother, Fred (Tracy) Grant of Cumberland; sisters, Rochelle (Robert) Erickson of Barronett and Laura Grant (Duane Most) of Cumberland; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson of Park Falls; nieces, Jennifer Bagley, Melanie Martin, Caitlin (Dan) Jones, Abigail (Alex) Clemens, Rena (James) Palmer, and Julia Grant; nephews, Isaiah (Mackenzie) Erickson, Tanner (Jacki) Grant, Carter Grant, and Gabriel Erickson; great-nephews, Mikel Hager, Daniel Bagley, Aydan and Mason Jones as well as great-nieces, Audrey Jones, Avanna Maurelli, and Evelyn Palmer.
He was preceded in death by wife, Judith Grant; parents, Edward and Evelyn Grant; sister, Grace Hager; and niece, Christina Coffelt.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at Northern Lakes Community Church, 825 8th Avenue, Cumberland, WI with Pastor Dennis Wright officiating.
A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
