In Memory of Edna Hovey

December 14, 1932 - April 22, 2024

Eddie (Edna) Hovey died on April 22, 2024 at Glenview Assisted Living at age 91.

Eddie (aka Sis, Edie) was born in Boston on December 14, 1932, to George and Barbara Foss. Eddie graduated from high school in Arlington, VA and went to nurses training at Garfield Hospital in Washington, D.C.. She worked at Garfield Hospital for several years.

Eddie married John Hovey on May 19, 1956. They were fortunate to have 66 years together. They had one daughter, Barb.

Eddie had just one daughter, but she made an impression on many young women as a Girl Scout leader in Oxon Hill, Maryland. She led weekly meetings and arranged camping trips and bike trips for the girls in the troop. She mentored the ninth graders in her Cadette troop to earn First Class Girl Scout.

When husband John retired in 1976, he and Eddie moved to Spooner to be near the Hovey family. They lived on Bass Lake in the town of Casey for many years before moving to the Spooner golf course.

Eddie loved music and started singing in church choir as a child. She sang in the Spooner UMC choir until 2020 when dementia limited her participation. She loved Sing Along time and any musical activity at Glenview.

Eddie was active in the Spooner Women’s club for over 40 years. She and John helped develop the Women’s Club Book Sale from its first year. Eddie was interested in genealogy. She enjoyed researching her family history in colonial New England. She was treasurer for both the Women’s Club and the Washburn County Genealogical society.

Eddie also enjoyed keeping journals. Her friends knew she could tell them when the ice went out on Bass Lake or when the hummingbirds returned.

She was preceded in death by husband John, parents George and Barbara Foss and brother Peter Foss. She is survived by daughter Barb. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including Duffy (Bill) Sauer, Gary Hovey, Carol Hovey and Cyndi (Eddie) Patrick.

Many thanks to the staff at Glenview and Regional Hospice for their loving care of Eddie.

Memorials to Spooner United Methodist Church , Glenview Assisted Living in Shell Lake, and/or Spooner Library.
