In Memory of Dorothy White
Passed away on September 19, 2019 in Chetek, WI at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Melford “Moe” White, who passed in 1999.
Dorothy was born on August 14, 1930 in rural Lafayette County Wisconsin to Ralph and Carrie (nee Franz) Sargent. Dorothy and Moe lived most of their lives in their home state of Wisconsin, retiring in 1995 to Chetek, an area they had come to love during camping trips. Dorothy graduated from Shullsburg Public High School in Shullsburg, WI. During her work life she was a nurse’s aide at hospitals in Dodgeville, WI and Platteville, WI, a secretary for Blackbourn & Sons of Shullsburg, a teller at Farmers & Merchants Bank of Shullsburg and an assembler at Heavy Duty Electric of Lake Geneva, WI, among other jobs. She was a previous member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Shullsburg and at the time of her death, a member of the United Methodist Church of Chetek, where she leaves behind many dear friends. She especially enjoyed volunteering for the church’s after-school program and serving as an officer in the congregation’s HHH Circle. She was a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary in association with her husband’s U.S. Army Service. She enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and hunting, as well as getting into trouble with her friends of many years and decades (and you know who you are!), card games and travel. During various trips with her husband, family and friends she visited most of the states in the U.S., including a lengthy tour of the U.S. and Canada in the couple’s favorite RV. She was particularly fond of the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii and, of course, the Northwoods and lakes of Wisconsin.
In addition to her beloved Moe, who she snagged at a dance and never let go, she was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Clifford, Francis and Art. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Jane Mauthe, of Beloit, WI, sisters-in-law Gloria Sargent and Kathleen Teasdale, numerous nieces and nephews who she loved very much, and “her kids,” her Godchildren Dan (Judy) Webster of Shullsburg, Sandee (Tony) Schunk of Jefferson, WI; David Webster of Bellingham, WA and Melissa (Mike) Niemiera of Victoria, MN, as well as their families.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, September 22nd at the United Methodist Church of Chetek at 12 Noon, visitation will begin at 11:15 a.m. Dorothy will be laid to rest at the Evergreen Cemetery in Shullsburg, Wisconsin on Monday, September 23, 2019.
