Dennis was born in Audubon, Iowa, the sixth child of Clarence and Katherine Heiken on November 14, 1942. He graduated from Buena Vista College in 1965 and married Mary Ann Nelson on October 2, 1965. From this union there were two children; Tonya (David) DePriest, of St. Paul, MN, and Jason Heiken, of Clear Lake. He worked in finance for a number of different companies throughout his career. Dennis’s career led to several opportunities to move throughout the US and Ireland. Dennis ended his career in finance when he fulfilled his dream of owning his own company when he purchased Connecting Point. Shortly after retirement, Dennis lost his wife of 43 years. Dennis was lucky to find the new love of his life when he met Wendy Wilson. They were married on October 12, 2011, and with this union he gained a son, Donald (Jennifer Traynor) Wilson, and beloved granddaughter Alys.

Dennis loved woodworking; he gifted many of these projects. Everything from jewelry boxes, to furniture – many people are the recipients of his talents and generosity. He was active in many clubs, groups and organizations; President of Balsam Lake Homeowners Association, Clayton Lions Club, Moon Lake Threshers, Clayton Village Board Member, Treasurer of Faith Lutheran Church in Clayton, Clayton Conservation Club. He volunteered many hours to these groups and organizations because he was passionate about the community in which he lived.
