In Memory of Clifford 'Larry' Main

July 2, 1946 - July 3, 2024

Clifford “Larry” Main, age, 78, a current resident of Spooner and longtime member of the Webb Lake community, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

Larry was born in Rockford, Illinois on July 2, 1946, and as a youth, moved to Webb Lake, Wisconsin, where his parents would purchase Iven Johnson’s store in 1956, renaming it The Main Store. During his high school years, Larry played several sports, but excelled at track, a trait he passed down to his daughter and granddaughter. Larry graduated from Webster High School in 1964, and then attended UW Superior, where he received a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1968. Larry continued his passion for high school sports by coaching Shell Lake Girls basketball and Webster Jr. High Boys basketball.

Larry married Connie Sue Johnson in 1965, and 3 children were born to this union- Todd Everett, Troy Douglas and Kerrie Nicole.

Larry was later remarried to Diane Holden in 1991, and was blessed to add Diane’s children- Brooke, Kari and David to their family.

Larry purchased The Main Store from his mother in 1989. It brought Larry much joy and pride that the Main Store was a family owned and ran business, where he could be a part of the Webb Lake Community which he so loved. Larry continued to own and run The Main Store until 2022. Larry also owned and operated The Lamplighter Inn restaurant in Webb Lake for several years. During his life, Larry was also a licensed real estate agent for many years – following in his father’s footsteps.

Larry was not only a businessman, but also a caring, giving man, a community and county leader, and believed in his civic duty to serve. He was a 20-year member of the Burnett County Board, promoted Burnett County by serving on the Burnett County Tourism Board, served 25 years as the Town Chairman of Webb Lake, and was passionately involved with the Lakes and Pines Sno Trails.

Larry was an avid sportsman, and spent his spare time hunting deer, bear, ducks, and had a love of fishing. He also ventured west with family and friends on elk hunts, bringing home the big one. Larry loved watching his sons and grandsons play basketball, baseball and track, and was proud of his daughter and granddaughter who also excelled in track. Larry was a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers, and enjoyed making the pilgrimage to Lambeau field to watch them play. Larry will be remembered by his community, family, and friends for his kindness, commitment and love to his community, and someone who was always on the job.

Larry is survived, and will be remembered and greatly missed as a devoted husband by his wife of 33 years- Diane, his children: Todd (Laura) Main, Troy (Emily) Main, Kerrie (Jarrod) Washburn, Brooke (Burl) Johnson, Kari (Shawn) Madsen, and David (Laina) Marx. His grandchildren: Madison, Matt, Haylee, Jack, Owen, Ava, Cash, Brady, and Jake. Great grandchildren: Oliver and Sophia. His brothers Dennis, and Greg (Sue), and sister Vickie (Scott), and many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents Troy and Geneva Main, sister Rachel, and brothers Ron and Russell Main.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, from Noon until 2pm, at the Spooner Funeral Home. A celebration of Larry’s life will follow at the Cabaret in Webb Lake from 3-6pm.

The family is thankful for the love and support of all their friends and family during these past few months.
