In Memory of Clayton Hargrave
Clayton “Groovy” Arthur Hargrave Age 71, of Rice Lake, WI passed on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the Maple Ridge Care Center in Spooner, WI.
He was beloved husband, father and grandpa. Clayton was born on August 6, 1948 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Wilbert and Gilda (Coleman) Hargrave. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1966, became a paratrooper and served in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1969. On May 9, 1970 Clayton wed Cheryl (Degeberg) Hargrave. Clayton had a love for cars that he built into a successful auto-body business, CH Auto, which he ran for over 40 years. His love of cars (Mopar specifically) and motorcycles (Harley Davidson) led him to build an impressive collection of 1970s era muscle cars (Barracuda, Road Runner) and a 1968 Harley Davidson Panhead motorcycle that he restored. His passion for cars and racing is reflected in his love of drag-racing (watching and participating), showing classic cars, and his service as President of the Rice Lake Racing Association from 1985 to 1989. In addition to this, Clayton was a Wisconsin sports fan, enjoyed classic rock, a cold beer, and morning coffee. He possessed a generous heart, a competitive drive, a tenacious spirit, a tremendous sense of humor, and a repertoire of sayings that were uniquely Groovy.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl Hargrave, son Matthew Hargrave, daughter Jennifer Penzkover, son-in-law Keith Penzkover, grandson Max Penzkover, sister June (John) Smith, brother Steve (Bonnie) Hargrave, brother in-law Charles Uchytil, brother in-law Gary Degeberg, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
