In Memory of Chester Schilling


February 18, 1943 - March 17, 2022

Chester V. Schilling, age 79, of Hayward, WI and formerly of Wausau, WI passed away on Thursday, March 17, 2022, at his home.

Chester Virgil Schilling was born February 18, 1943, in Wausau, WI the son of Andrew and Frances (Gribowski) Schilling.

He was raised in Wausau and graduated from Wausau East High School in 1961. He continued his education at North Central Technical College in Wausau where he received training in welding. On June 29, 1963, Chester was joined in marriage to Paulette Schlag in Wausau. Chester worked in the Wausau area his entire career and worked for Wausau Homes, Jarp Industries, Marmet Manufacturing and DC Everest High School. He also operated his own dairy farm while he worked some of his other jobs. In the mid 1970’s, Chester and Paulette purchased property on Moose Lake near Hayward, WI where they built their cabin for retirement. They also enjoyed traveling the western United States in their fifth wheel. After Chester’s retirement in 2005, he and Paulette enjoyed spending their winters in Deming, NM. Chester was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting whitetail and mule deer, fishing for walleye and trapping. He also was a rockhound and made jewelry from the stones he found.  Chester was a dedicated and devoted family man and used his many construction, plumbing and electrician skills to help his family.

Chester is survived by his wife of 58 years, Paulette; five children, Todd (Stacy) Schilling of Wausau, WI, Matthew Schilling of Milwaukee, WI, Lori (Kurt) Arendt of Mosinee, WI, Daniel (Kelly) Schilling of Wausau, WI, Kari (Brett) Weber of Withee, WI; eight grandchildren, Seth, Addie, Adam, Eric, Tyler, Makayla, Ashley and Madalyn; eight great grandchildren, Trenton, Zoey, Brooklynn, Conor, Harlow, Kynzleigh, Myles and Kaleb; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and ten sisters.

A gathering celebrating Chester’s life will be held from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th, at Sylvan Hill Park in Wausau. Interment will be at a later time in Restlawn Memorial Park in Wausau.
