In Memory of Charles Thomas
Charles Arthur "Chuck" Thomas, 89, of Shell Lake passed away surrounded by his family, March 15, 2020, at Indianhead Medical Center in Shell Lake. He was born July 12, 1930 in Dewey Township to Frank and Retta (Koon) Thomas. He was married in Zion Lutheran Church, Bone Lake on June 11, 1960 to Beverly Larsen.
Chuck proudly served in Korea with the US Army artillery on the front lines on the 38th Parallel during the Korean War. After his return, Chuck worked for a few years in Chicago before purchasing the family homestead farm on Hwy H, where he operated a dairy farm for many years. While farming he also worked for Northwest Wisconsin CEP in Spooner aiding the economically disadvantaged in finding employment and/or training. Chuck and Bev enjoyed their winters spent in Kissimmee, FL.
He was a member of the Barron County Barbershop Choir for over 20 years, and sang at countless weddings, funerals and community events in addition to the Salem Lutheran Church choir. Chuck served on the Salem Lutheran Church Council for many years. He was also a member of the Shell Lake American Legion and always made a point to stay in touch with the many he served alongside.
Chuck is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Bev; 5 children: Sandy (Steve) Jacobson, Lee (Amie) Thomas of Shell Lake, David (Colette) Thomas of Tomahawk, Brenda Thomas of Farmington, MN and Jill (John) Gajewski of Hayward; 6 grandchildren: Cole (Theresa), Cody, Kaden, Nathan, Emily and Gretchen; 2 great grandchildren: Carl and Cora; nieces, nephews, and many other family and friends. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Retta; sister, Wilma Kunz; 2 brothers, Franklin and Earl; and special uncle, Lafe Koon.
A private family service will take place this week at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Sue Odegard officiating. In the interest of public health there will be a memorial service at a later date. Thank you for your understanding, and please know that the family of Chuck appreciates your cooperation for the good of us all. Burial will be in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery with full military honors at a later date.
In lieu of flowers Chuck's family requests that memorials be sent to Salem Lutheran Church - Shell Lake.
