Beulah Laura Formell Nelson, age 92 of Frederic, WI died Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Frederic Nursing and Rehab Community in Frederic, WI.

Beulah was preceded in death by her husband Loren, parents, Leslie & Bertha Formell, step father, Wallace Winegar, Sisters Alice Drew & Lois Dye and Brother Leslie Formell, Jr. She is survived by her two sons, Craig (Mary Jo) and Mark (Laurie); daughter, Valerie (Fred) Sommer; five grandchildren, Katie (Cory) Schmidt, Meredith (Nick) Uram, Anders Nelson (Mark Hemberger), Steven (Kaylee) Sommer, and Christopher (Katie) Sommer; three great-grandchildren, Grace Schmidt, Brooks Uram and Nash Uram; sister, Joan Kalbacken; sister-in-law, Marlys Formell; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Beulah was born March 5, 1931, in Chicago, IL to Leslie & Bertha Formell. Due to the depression, her family moved to the Bone Lake area in the early ‘30’s for a better life and a few years later to the Indian Creek area. She graduated from Frederic High School in 1949 and attended Superior State Teachers College for a year before starting her teaching career at the Maple Valley School in Clam Falls. It was here that she met the young farmer, Loren Nelson and was united in marriage on June 30, 1951, at Clam Falls Lutheran Church. In 1956, they bought a farm in Cushing. They sold the home in Cushing and moved to St. Croix Falls in 2014 and she has been a resident of the Frederic Nursing and Rehab Community since 2018.

Beulah spent many summers & fall and winter nights traveling to Superior furthering her education to first acquire her bachelor’s degree in 1966 and then her master’s degree in 1973 as a reading specialist. She encouraged everyone to read whether it was a novel, newspaper or even a magazine such as Sports Illustrated. Her teaching career took her to the Maple Valley, Pleasant Dale, Cushing, Luck and St. Croix Falls schools. She was a lifelong learner as evidenced by taking Spanish language classes in Mission, TX and her participation in the Polk-Burnett Retired Teachers group after her retirement.

Beulah and Loren traveled extensively before and after retirement. When the kids were young, they were piled into the pickup truck camper and traveled all over the United States from coast to coast. She and Loren visited Hawaii every other year for about 20 years, even considering moving there in the early 80’s. Travel also took them on a number of cruises and to Europe where she did extensive research to complete the genealogy of both her and Loren’s families through 8 generations.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Cushing where she sang in the choir, chaired the library committee, made apple pies, taught Sunday school, and belonged to the lady’s circle. She and Loren were also members of Trinity Lutheran Church at their winter home of nearly 30 years in Mission, TX where she sang with the Fiesta Village Singers and taught English as a second language. She was never too busy to join her kids playing catch or hitting fly balls, when she wasn’t correcting school papers, driving the tractor, or watching her kids, grandkids and great grandkids in their extracurricular activities or following the Minnesota Twins in person, on the radio, or TV.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cushing or Trinity Lutheran Church in Mission, TX.
