In Memory of Bernard Masyga

Bernie was born in 1927 in St. Paul, MN to Bernard and Frances Masyga. He was married to his beloved wife Joan in Montrose, MN in 1953. Bernie graduated from Washington High School in St. Paul in 1945. He enlisted in the Air Force and is a veteran of World War 2 and the Korean Conflict. Bernie was employed at 3M in St. Paul and then transferred to the 3M plant in Cumberland in 1963 as a plant engineer. The family built their home of 57 years on Beaver Dam Lake.

In his earlier years in Cumberland, he was an active community member. He was the first lay reader at St. Mary’s Church, served on the boards of Girls and Boy Scouts, United Fund, Library, and Utility.

He had many hobbies and interests. Bernie bowled, golfed, and played bridge. Many Cumberland residents will remember him for his beautiful photos of Cumberland scenes, and for his hobby framing business in his home that he started after retirement. His woodworking room was his second home. Bernie had a passion for reading; when his eyes failed him, he enjoyed the audiobooks from the library. He looked forward to the annual vacation trips with Joan. They traveled to every state except for Delaware. They also traveled internationally to Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Bernie enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends. Nothing was more important to him than his family and his faith.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joan; children: Susan (Dr. Jim) Towne of Kingwood, TX; Richard (Joyce) Masyga of Evergreen, CO; Patricia Masyga (Joe) of Plymouth, MN; Jennifer (Paul) Perzichilli of Naples, FL; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and sister.

A private family Christian Mass will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will be in Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial can be sent to the Cumberland Library
