Washburn County DA Aaron Marcoux Issues Press Release On Spooner Homicide Case

SHELL LAKE, WI -- Washburn County District Attorney Aaron Maroux today issued the following press release regarding the conviction of a Hayward man who was sentenced in the Spooner mobile home homicide case on Monday.

Press Release

Washburn County District Attorney Aaron Marcoux announced that Joseph Rogers was convicted of Second Degree Homicide. Rogers was sentenced to 35 years in the Wisconsin Prison System.

The components of the sentence include 15 years of initial incarceration followed by 20 years of Extended Supervision. Rogers was convicted and sentenced for causing the death of Troy Sweep. On July 17, 2019, Mr. Sweep was found deceased having suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck. The investigation revealed Rogers had mistakenly entered the Sweep residence while intoxicated. While inside Rogers was confronted by Mr. Sweep and a struggle took place resulting in the fatal stab wound. Rogers DNA was found on the knife as well as on Mr. Sweep.

District Attorney Marcoux said, “I want to express my gratitude to the Spooner Police Department, Washburn County Sheriff's Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation. Without their diligent efforts and expert investigation this conviction and the safety of our community that comes with it, could not be possible.

"I would also like to especially thank Washburn County as a whole for its patience while this case worked its way through the long and arduous process of the legal system. This case endured through four defense attorneys, three different judges and four mental health related examinations but focus was never lost. We, the District Attorney’s Office and local law enforcement, want you to know that we will aggressively pursue and prosecute violent crime. Public safety is and will always be our primary concern.”
