Washburn County Announces Hire Of New County Veterans Service Officer

WASHBURN COUNTY -- Washburn County announces the hire of new County Veterans Service Officer Joe Schmidt, of New Richmond, WI.

In March 2021, DrydenWire published a job opportunity announcement for the position of Washburn County Veteran’s Service Officer following the departure of Lisa Powers.

The County of Washburn says that it is proud to announce the hire of new CVSO Joe Schimdt. Joe has 24 years of service in the military. He served as NCO in the United States Marine Corps, transferred to the Wisconsin National Guard in 2009, and then was commissioned in the Wisconsin Army National Guard.

Joe served as a Commander at Company D in River Falls and Headquarters Company in Eau Claire and as the Personnel Officer (S1) prior to his recent deployment overseas in Ukraine, where he served as a Maneuver and Logistics advisor in the WI Army National Guard. He spent 18 months both in training and assisting the Armed Forces of Ukraine and international partners Military Decision Making Processes, development planning, and building tactical efficiencies. Serving in this capacity as a Captain, Joe will be on active duty until mid-July.

After receiving his Business Administration degree from American Intercontinental University Joe became a realtor and, although he is not currently licensed, he still owns Investment Properties.

Hobbies that Joe enjoys include golfing, camping, canoeing, playing video games with his kids, and is involved with scouting. He currently lives in New Richmond with his wife, his son and two daughters, along with 2 dogs and a cat. While New Richmond might be a ways out of Shell Lake, Joe doesn’t mind the drive as he considers this to be a mid-point; his wife works out of St. Paul and he used to commute to Eau Claire.

Joe is eager to get to know Washburn County and he is enthused about helping our veterans – he has been involved with outreach and has assisted many retired veterans, either directly or in connecting them to a CVSO.
