MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has announced the end of the frozen road declaration for the entire state, covering Zones 1 through 5, effective at 12:01a on Friday, February 28.
The decision comes amid a rapid warmup in recent days, which has led to changing road conditions. As a result, Class II and posted road restrictions are temporarily on hold, while field staff continue to monitor and evaluate conditions. Motor carriers are urged to stay updated by checking the Seasonal Weight Restriction Program website or calling the Frozen Roads hotline at (608) 266-8417.
WisDOT, in coordination with county highway personnel, monitors temperature forecasts and uses frost tubes—liquid-filled devices placed under pavement—to determine when roads are sufficiently frozen to support heavier loads or thawed enough to lift restrictions.
Class II roads, which include approximately 1,400 miles of state highways, are particularly vulnerable to damage from heavy truck traffic during the spring thaw. Local governments have the authority to impose or lift weight restrictions on county highways, town roads, and municipal streets as needed.
For more details on oversized or overweight permits, haulers can visit WisDOT’s Oversize/Overweight Permits website or contact the Oversize/Overweight Permits Unit at (608) 266-7320.
