UPDATE: Victim Identified In Fatal Crash On US 8 Near Cameron

CAMERON, WI (DrydenWire) - A tragic crash occurred early Wednesday morning, February 28, 2024, on US 8 near CTH M in Barron County, near Cameron, resulting in one fatality. The incident, reported at 12:16a, involved a semi-tractor-trailer and an SUV.

Assisting agencies at the scene included the Barron County Sheriff's Office, Rusk County Sheriff's Office, Cameron Fire Department, Barron County Highway Department, and Marshfield Medical Center Ambulance.

According to preliminary reports from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the semi-tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on Highway 8 when an SUV traveling westbound lost control, crossed the centerline, and collided with the tractor-trailer. The impact caused the SUV to veer into the ditch, while the tractor-trailer came to rest across both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.

Despite life-saving measures administered at the scene, the driver of the SUV, a 69-year-old male from Winter, WI, identified as Gene Elmer Hannack, was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the semi-tractor-trailer, a 52-year-old male from Hudson, WI, identified as Andrew D. Akenson, did not sustain any injuries. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
