UPDATE: Missing Kayaker Found Safe After Multi-Day Search

WASHBURN COUNTY (UPDATE): The Washburn County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday said that the missing Sarona teenager, Gunnur Hess, has been located safe by Wisconsin DNR Wardens in St Croix Falls, WI. The Sheriff’s Office thanks everyone that assisted and the those that submitted tips.

WASHBURN COUNTY — A search is underway for 19-year-old Gunnur Hess, who went missing after setting out on a kayaking trip down the Namekagon River on Friday, according to a press release from the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday, June 14, 2024, Gunnur Hess, 19, of Sarona was supposed to put in a grey pelican kayak with a white bottom at the county K Namekagon River access. Gunnur had contacted his family and told them of his plan, and that he would contact them when he was ready to be picked up. Gunnur’s family has not heard of Gunnur since. Gunnur’s truck was located at the County k landing and since been removed by family members.

Washburn and Burnett Counties have traveled the river with assistance from fire departments, and found no signs of Gunnur.
