SHELL LAKE, Wis. -- Come learn how modern manure management, high quality forage, and healthy soils come together in a successful farm operation. The Shell Lake-Yellow River Farmer-led Watershed Council invites you to a field day at Legacy Farms, LLC on October 14, 12 PM to 3 PM. The Schloneger family operates Legacy Farms, LLC, a dairy operation southwest of Shell Lake. The field day will focus on how they use a dragline manure injection system to attain nutrient management and soil health goals while raising high-quality, low-cost forage for their milk cows.
Reuben Schloneger will discuss how cover crops are used as high-quality forages and how they have used cover crops as emergency forage in winter kill situations. Dave Tolberg with Northland Crop Consulting will be on hand to discuss the soil benefits of using dragline manure-injection equipment. The equipment will be on hand for viewing and the return on investment will be discussed. UW-Madison Nutrient Pest Management Specialist Kolby Grint will cover soil compaction impacts and how to improve soils with a history of compaction.
The event will take place in the machine shed at Legacy Farms. The farm is located at W8659 Woodyard Road Shell Lake. From Shell Lake take US Highway 63 south out of town. Turn right on Woodyard Road. Watch for the signs.
This event is free and a boxed lunch will be provided. Registration is required to reserve your lunch.
