BARRON COUNTY — Ruth Skeie, Spooner, received this year's Warren Knowles award for her work in promoting tourism and outdoor recreation in Wisconsin.  The award was presented to her by Wisconsin Indianhead Country Tourism at this years Governor's Fishing Opener held in Ladysmith.

In presenting the award to Skeie, Indianhead Country board member Jim Bishop said Skeie's Spooner associates have described her as the "consummate volunteer in the community."  She served for 12 years as Director of the Spooner Area Chamber of Commerce, Treasurer of Wisconsin North West Heritage Passage that runs the Arts and Hands Gallery, and has been past treasurer, trustee and member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

With her husband Marlin, Skeie owned and operated Highland Park Campground on Cyclone Lake for 25 years.  For a quarter century she has also been and active member of the Wisconsin Indianhead Country Tourism serving on the board, Vice President, and currently the President.  "Ruth is an invaluable part of our staff," said Deb Sterchy, Indianhead Executive Director.

When not promoting tourism, Skeie loves to quilt, displaying her knitted art at area craft shows and shops.

The award is named after former Governor Warren Knowles who actively promoted Wisconsin tourism, especially fishing.  He, along with Indianhead Country Tourism started the Governors Fishing Opener event in 1965.

Deb Sterchy, Executive Director of Wisconsin Indianhead Country Tourism, stands with Ruth Skeie after the latter received the Warren Knowles tourism award.  The award is presented each year at the Governors Fishing Opener to persons who have done outstanding work in promoting tourism and outdoor recreation in the state.
