Spooner Man Sentenced For OWI With Child Passenger In Car

WASHBURN COUNTY (DrydenWire) – The Court has sentenced Spooner, WI man, Anthony Koprowski, age 37, for a conviction of operating while intoxicated, with a minor passenger in the vehicle. The charges against Koprowski stemmed from an incident in November 2023 which led to his arrest by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

BACKSTORY

DrydenWire reported in November that Anthony J Koprowski, 37, from Spooner WI, was arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) Spooner Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 1st offense, with one child in the vehicle under the age of 16.

According to the WSP, on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at approximately 6:56p, Washburn County Sheriff’s Office Jail Staff advised that a male subject was at the jail to pick up an intoxicated individual who had been arrested earlier that evening. The Jail Staff reported that the male subject had driven to the jail and appeared to be impaired.

A Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper responded to the Washburn County Sheriff’s Office parking lot and observed the male subject sitting in his vehicle. The WSP Trooper observed that the driver, identified as Mr. Koprowski by the WSP, showed signs of impairment. A subsequent investigation, including standardized field sobriety testing, showed that Koprowski had operated a motor vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance, according to the WSP.

Koprowski was subsequently arrested and charged with operating while under the influence of a restricted controlled substance-1st offense while having a minor passenger in the vehicle. The WSP said that the passenger was a 6-year-old, who was turned over to a sober family member.

Koprowski was transported to a local hospital for an evidentiary chemical test of his blood and then turned over to the Washburn County Jail.

UPDATE

Online circuit court records show that a criminal complaint was filed against Koprowski in Washburn County Circuit Court in June 2024, charging him with Misdemeanor Operate While Intoxicated with a Passenger under 16 Years Old, and Misdemeanor Operate With a Restricted Controlled Substance with a Passenger under 16 Years Old.

Koprowski entered a plea of guilty to his charge of Misdemeanor Operate While Intoxicated with a Passenger under 16 Years Old during a recent court hearing. The remaining charge was dismissed.

The Hon. Judge Angeline Winton ordered Koprowski to serve 5 days in county jail with an allowance to serve those days on electronic monitor. His driving privileges will be revoked for 12 months.

Koprowski is also ordered to undergo an alcohol and other drug assessment and pay over $2,000 in costs and fees.
