Speed Believed To Be Factor In Single-Vehicle Crash That Results In Fatality

SAWYER COUNTY -- A Stone Lake, WI, resident has died following a single-vehicle crash in Sawyer County, according to a press release from the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, on Friday, July 22, 2022, at 6:33p, Sawyer County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted by Sawyer County EMS, Stone Lake Fire Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash on County Highway F near Langham Lane in the Town of Sand Lake.

Upon arrival on the scene, deputies learned from eyewitnesses that a 1982 Chevrolet Corvette operated by Raymond J. Wilcox, age 62, of Stone Lake, WI, was traveling south on County Highway F and attempted to pass several vehicles. While doing so, the Wilcox vehicle hit the gravel on the shoulder of the northbound lane, over-corrected, and entered the ditch on the southbound lane striking a tree.

Despite lifesaving efforts by deputies, Wilcox succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

It is believed speed may have been a factor in the crash, according to Sawyer County authorities.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office and the Sawyer County Coroner’s Office.
