Two months ago, I was joined by my wife and two young sons as I was sworn in as the State Senator for the 25th Senate District. Since then I have worked to fulfill the promises I made when I was campaigning for this office: to listen to the people I represent and to bring Madison’s attention to northern Wisconsin.
In these first two months I have held listening sessions in Grantsburg, Ashland, Hurley, Mellen, and Spooner with another one scheduled in Barron for March 10th. The 25th Senate District is the largest one geographically in the state, containing eight entire counties and significant portions of a ninth. I am making it a priority to hold listening sessions in Douglas, Bayfield, Sawyer, and Price Counties as soon as possible.
In two months I have gotten 354 letters, e-mails and phone calls that have received responses, on topics ranging from child care to election integrity to wolf management to broadband infrastructure. My staff and I have a further 44 open cases that we are diligently monitoring.
I sit on the Senate Committee on Education and have truly enjoyed my time in these two months touring schools in Superior, Solon Springs, Prentice, Turtle Lake, and Webster. I also have already had meetings or tours (or will within the next few days) in Shell Lake, Birchwood, Hayward, Ashland, Rice Lake, Phillips, Bayfield, and Washburn.
When people from the 25th District visit Madison I always tell them I’m happy to meet back home. That being said, I have spent 22 days in the Capitol. That time has included many necessary meetings to craft a responsible state budget and other pieces of legislation that affect our communities. My favorite events so far have been Heart of the North Days, Superior Days, and other times when we get to show off how great life up north is for legislative offices around the state.
